Online Shopping

What is Online Shopping?

Online Shopping is a form of electronic commerce which allows consumers to directly buy goods or services from a seller over the Internet using a web browser.
E-commerce continues to thrive in the Philippines with six out of 10 Filipinos buying products online. All of us have access to the internet so that many people choose to shop online than shopping in the mall. The rise of online consumers is most likely expected to continue in the coming years due to the increase in the number of consumers getting connected to the internet.

Examples of Online Shops

More people are seen strolling and shopping in the Malls, Bazaars, and Tiangges availing back to back sales and promotions in the product. Many people go out to spend time for shopping, however the traffic in the Philippines make us stressful that led a lot of us to shop online. The Online Shops such as Amazon, Lazada, Zalora, Shopee, and OLX are gained popularity in our country. Consumers choose to online shops due to convenience, discounts and savings. With just a few clicks, consumers can easily begin buying from shopping websites from their own internet-connected desktop computers, laptops, and mobile phones. Filipinos’ top reasons for doing their shopping online are convenience, door-to-door delivery, affordability, and accessibility.

Benefits of Online Shopping

One of the most obvious benefits of online shopping which cannot be overlooked is convenience. The conveniences of online shopping which is enjoyed by all of us is the ability to shop for products or services at a time which is convenient for the consumer. Online retailers accept orders twenty four hours a day while consumers who wish to shop at traditional stores have to be available to visit the store during normal business hours. This can be a major inconvenience especially for shoppers who work long hours or shoppers who work odd hours. Online shopping eliminates this concern because shoppers can simply access online stores from their computer or mobile whenever they have free time available. Another convenience is the ability to order products from around the world. Shoppers are no longer limited to products offered by local retailers because the vast majority of online retailers offer shipping to many different locations. This can make it easy for online shoppers to acquire hard to find items or items which are available to a particular area.

Conclusion

We can conclude that Online Shopping is helpful to all Filipinos, why? Because we will not spend more time in traffic and in long queue in counter. It will not be inconvenient to Filipinos who work long hours because consumer simply access online stores from their mobile phone or computer if they have free time available.

Baybayin: The Ancient Script of the Philippines

Introduction

For what we have known Filipino is our language, the way on how we communicate and connect with one another, but before this language became our way of communication there is a script called “Baybayin” or known as “Alibata” when it was introduced in the early 1900s. But what exactly is Baybayin? Is it same thing as Alibata? Is it like Chinese writing? Japanese? Arabic?

What is Baybayin?

Baybayin is alphasyllabry writing system known as an abugida. Consisting of symbols for consonants and vowels. The Baybayin writing system is comprised of 17 characters that express consonants and vowels found in old Tagalog.

IAlibata and Baybayin the same?

In regards to whether Alibata is the same thing as Baybayin; yes, it is the same thing as it refers to the same writing system, but Alibata is the wrong term to use as explained by Hector Santos.
To compare it to Arabic or Chinese writing would not be a precise comparison. It could be closer to Japanese writing as they both syllable based.

Etymology of Baybayin

MABUHAY! Tagalog is the most widely spoken tongue in the Philippines today. Baybayin is a writing system native to the Philippines. It came from the word baybay means “to spell”. Baybayin was used to write short things such as poetry and announcements. It was carved in natural material such as leaves, palm fronds, tree bark and fruit rinds, but the most common material was bamboo. The writing tools or panulat were the points of daggers or small pieces of iron.

The Baybayin Method of Writing

There were a total of 17 characters: three (3) vowels and fourteen (14) consonants, but when combined with the small vowel-modifying marks, called kudlíts, the number of characters increased to forty-five (45). This way of writing is called an abugida. When a person spelled a word orally or recited the baybayin, the individual letters were called babâ, kakâ, dadâ, etc., but the original sequence of the letters was different to what it is today. This “alphabetical” order was recorded in the Tagalog Doctrina Christiana.

Origin of the Baybayin

The baybayin is more like a syllabary. This name for the old Filipino script came from one of the earliest Philippine language dictionaries ever published, the Vocabulario de Lengua Tagala of 1613. Early Spanish accounts usually called the baybayin “Tagalog letters” or “Tagalog writing” while the Visayans called it “Moro writing” because it was imported from Manila, which was one of the ports where many products from Muslim traders entered what are now known as the Philippine islands. The Bikolanos called the script "basahan" and the letters, "guhit."
Bonifacio Comandante claims that the development of baybayin was influenced by the use of giant clams. The earliest document found in the Philippines is the Laguna Copperplate Inscription from 900, which was written in a version of the Javanese bawi script, also in the Brahmic family. Sometime between then and 1002, baybayin was developed in the Philippines from bawi or related Indic scripts, becoming more and more widely used through to the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500s. But then Baybayin ends up during the twentieth century that had survived only in limited time.

End of the Baybayin Alphabet

The Spaniards of the Christian faith corresponding hatred for all the forms of belief that led them to regard the native writings and art as works of the Devil.
The inability of the ancient script to record the new sounds introduced by the Spaniards, the rapid acquisition of literacy in the Latin script with its concomitant social and material benefits and the disruption of traditional family activities were the main culprits for the loss of the Tagalog script.

Direction of Baybayin Writing

The baybayin was read from left to right in rows that progressed from top to bottom, just as we read in English today.

Ambitions and Goals

  Introduction

As students, we need to become a student, including knowledge of our subjects, the skills necessary to be a model of our peers as well as the attitudes and behaviors that encompass "professionalism". We ultimately hope that all of our hard works will let us become graduates and be successful in our ambitions and dreams, realizing that "success" can mean many different things. There should be little argument that a primary definition of "success" in being a student includes either achieving exceptional grades in our subjects. But success can and should encompass many other dimensions, particularly those that exemplify advancement of their own goals, successfully performing a performance, properly leading your own group or class towards having a fun experience throughout the school days. Thus, a continuing challenge for students is assuring that we ourselves and our fellow students will translate performance into success after graduation.

Difference between Goal and Ambition

“Goal” is the target set by a person while“ambition” is a desire to reach that goal with person satisfaction. goal is something that is a reachable and should be achieved while an ambition is something more difficult to achieve , it is a desire that we are looking forward to and work for to achieve it. Goals are measurable in a specified period of time. It can be short-term or long term. Both classification can also be used independently or at the same time. Ambition can be measured in the duration of the process. Ambition is usually long term because of duration of process and consequences of the efforts within the process. To compare, “ambition” can be said as the means while “goal” is the end . Goal also refers to the development of the mind. In contrast, ambition is the development of the future. Goal is like as target , which you set for your life and you want to achieve it. It is the most important part of life. It gives us reason to live.

Why do you need an Ambition?

When we were little kids, most of us probably asked “What I want to be in the future?” and we likely answered almost similar professions; like becoming a doctor, a fire fighter, a teacher, a nurse, a soldier, a police man, and an astronaut, this are some of the basic answers we all give to our teachers but today, it’s almost definitely not the one we picked in the past, because we now know the world is much more bigger than that, there are lots of other professions out there for us to pick, and the society or sometimes our parents just straight out pressure us to the core to pick one in over hundred thousands of professions. Picking a profession don’t just need to be “... because it’s what I wanted” but it also needs to be attainable and time bound; like you can’t be a superhero you idolized as a kid like Superman or Wonder Woman; you can only be a hero in a humanistic way, what’s more you need to earn a living for yourself and of course for your future family.
Subha Sarkar said, “A man without any ambition is a boat without the sails. It can drift in any direction and at the end of the day, may find life a fruitless and frustrated nothingness.” This just explains that without our ambitions our life is good as over, we live everyday hoping to achieve what we want to be and what our ideals are. We try our very best and sometimes we do not. All of the hardships along the way is part of the process in achieving your ambition, it is not a factor that can stop you in achieving it, instead it determines what will you choose, like what profession will you pick and what road will you take toward your ambition and goals.

Confused with your Ambition?

Not having any professions in mind is fine because you don’t hold what you will become in life, and it is always never too late to pursue our dreams and ambitions. These ambitions are always deep inside us and will never be gone,  it is indeed a part of ourselves to achieve something. Let us all keep in mind that achievements are endless and competition can also be a motivation for our ambitions in life. We just need to keep in mind that we are free to take our time since rushing things up just says you are not yet ready for it and sometimes you need to follow your heart if your mind can’t keep up.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Strand

Introduction to STEM

We all know that there are a lot of things that had been change in our lives. As the years passes by, people are discovering things in order to improve our lives and to make our works easier than before. They introduce technology to us that brought a big impact in our society. It became part of our daily life. Since our country is still developing, the government is trying its best to solve the problems we are encountering in the Philippines. They launched the K to 12 Program of the Department of Education that aims to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts, skills, and develop lifelong learners and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skill development, employment, and entrepreneurship. It also aims to improve Filipino students' mathematical, scientific, and linguistic competence. With the new curriculum, DepEd promised to offer higher quality education through tracks. Each track will give students enough time to master a field and enhance their skills.
The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]).
We are now in a K-12 Curriculum where Senior High School is being implemented. In which in this level, we should take any if these tracks; Academic Track, Technical-Vocational -Livelihood Track Strand, Sports Track Strand, and Arts and Design Track Strand, wherein in the Academic Track, there are four (4) different strands; the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), and General Academics (GAS).
I have a question to a variety of students who choose, didn't choose, and will choose the STEM Strand. To all of the students who choose other track and strand than STEM, "Why you didn't choose STEM?". To the students who are now STEM students, "What motivates you to choose STEM?". To the STEM students that are now in their College life, "How did you surpass STEM?". To the students that are now incoming Grade 11, "Why don't you try STEM?"

What is STEM?

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is one of the strands in the Academic Track of the new curriculum in our country, the Philippines that should be taken by the Grade 10 or “Junior” Students upon enrolment in the Senior High School (SHS).

It is an educational program developed and designed to prepare Senior High School (SHS) students for college and graduate study in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This strand, the STEM aims to foster inquiring minds, logical reasoning, and collaboration skills.

It also aims to inculcate in students various theories and concepts in Science and Mathematics. The focus of this is to provide practical learning experiences in order for students to understand the concepts better through application, controlled experiments, research and practice. This will also help to equip the students with knowledge and skills necessary in the pursuit of degree programs in engineering, architecture, medical / health sciences, and computer studies.

What will I become if I choose STEM?

If you want to become an engineer, an architect, a pilot, a statistician, a scientist, a chemist, a biologist, an astrophysicist, a dentist, a physician, a nutritionist, a nurse, a doctor, a pharmacist, etc. then this strand will suit you.

What skills should I possess if I take STEM?

The potential skills that you should have if you take this strand, the STEM are the following: ability to analyze, ability to work efficiently, having a good communication skills, being creative, and having a good leadership. Possessing mathematical, scientific, and technical ability is the most salient capability in this strand.

What are the subjects in STEM?

In all of the strands, there are two kind of subjects; the specialized and core subjects. Specialized subjects are the subjects those are in the specific strand and track only. Such as in STEM, the specialized subjects in this strand are the following: Pre-Calculus, Basic Calculus, General Biology 1, General Biology 2, General Chemistry 1, General Chemistry, General Physics 1, General Physics 2, Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction, Work Immersion / Research / Career Advocacy / Culminating Activity. The core subjects, on the other hand are the ones that are implemented in all of the strands and tracks including STEM such as Oral-Communication, General Mathematics, Empowerment-Technologies (ICT), Physical Education and Health, Komunikasyon at Pananaliksik, and Personal Development.
There are two (2) semesters in each Grade Level (Grade 11 and 12) in Senior High School, the First and Second or the last Semester. The subjects on the Second Semester are just the upgraded topics from the First Semester such as for the specialized subjects, from Pre-Calculus, it will become Basic Calculus, from General Biology 1 to General Biology 2. For the core subjects in contrast, General Mathematics will become Statistics and Probabilities, Oral-Communication to Reading and Writing Skills and many more.

Why choose STEM?

Some of the students choose STEM because they were thinking that it is a challenge for them to take this strand. But there are some that chooses STEM to be ready for their college courses.

What is the difference between

STEM and other strands?

The difference of the STEM curriculum with the other strands and tracks is “the focus on advanced concepts and topics”.

Why STEM is important?

STEM is  about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics which expands into every aspect of our lives. Science is everywhere in a fact that all the things that we see are related to science. It also allows individual to explore and discover things and its significance to the community. Science influences our ability to adapt to our environment because every human is aligned with adaptation so that they are able to adjust to their changing environment.

Next to it is the Technology. When we say technology, it has a big role to our lives. All of the things around us are made of technology. Living without technology is meaningless. In short, living with technology makes our lives easier.

Lastly, the Engineering and Mathematics, it is not just only numbers but it refers to the product of technology. Mathematics is in every occupation, every activity we do in our lives. When we look at the buildings, roads, bridges, houses and other structures, the one thing that I will say s that it is the tower of mathematics. It can also enhance our skills analytically and reasoning ability. It also helps us to understand the world better. It is the reason why STEM education is important, one of the factors is that it is because our world depends on it as well as it can help the economy to grow.

Through this, we can be able to conclude that STEM Education which is the  Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics is very important because in this generation it has been part of our lives. We need to study all of this things in order for us to have a big opportunity to succeed in life especially for those who are spiring to become a doctor, engineer, scientist, and a lot more.
